I have a limited number of USB ports on my work laptop, so I didn't want to dedicate 2 ports to one device. There were a number of other DVD RW drives available, but most of them seemed to use 2 ports, one for power, data, and control; the other just for power. I would rather have one USB port, and a wall wart.
When I found this one, it didn't say it used two USB ports, so I thought it got all the power it needed from one USB port. Turns out, it has a wall wart,
but no power switch. To get the computer to recognize it is anti-intuitive.
Instead of powering it up, then connecting the USB cable, you have to do it the other way round.
It seems the only way to get files onto an erased disc is to format it for "Drag-To_Disc", which takes up to 14 minutes, then use the eject menu item on the drive drop down menu. When you do that, it gives you a dialog box about allowing the disk to continue to be usable as a drag to disk, or close it.
I chose to close it, and it took up to 4 minutes to close it. In the meantime, Windows popped up an error box about not having a disk in the drive. The drive continued to churn until it had closed the disk, and the contents are usable in another, non "Drag-to_Disk" compatible file.
This is only for a CD-RW. Haven't tried it with a DVD-RW, etc.
Shipping was phenomenal. I ordered it Friday AM, and picked standard shipping. It was on my doorstep Saturday afternoon. What did they use, the Star Trek Transporter?
