This DVD/CD Reader/Burner is a good product. I got this one because it needs to be plugged in. I didn't want one that would drain the power off of my Laptop battery. This product is very reasonably priced and works well, my only complaint is that it is a bit slow.

LaCie 16X LIGHTSCRIBE DL D2 EXT DVDRW FW w/ Toast Titanium ( 300786 ) Review

LaCie 16X LIGHTSCRIBE DL D2 EXT DVDRW FW w/ Toast Titanium ( 300786 )

I recently bought one of the LaCie DVD burners with Lightscribe, in order to burn DVDs that I had created using iDVD on my Macintosh. However, every time I tried burning a disc I would get an error message. I spoke to LaCie's customer service who said "We don't support iDVD, only Toast. Call Apple." I was not very pleased with this response. Since LaCie markets heavily to Mac users, and iDVD is the main program for creating DVDs on the Mac, I was surprised at this lack of support. I called Apple, who basically said that it sounded like a problem with the DVD burner. Since I had tried this on two different computers, I agreed. I was ready to return the unit when I did some further Internet searching. Turns out that there is a simple solution for using iDVD: in iDVD, after you're done assembling the DVD, go to "Save as disc image" (under File menu). This creates a disk image on your desktop (can take a few hours). When it's done, open the disk image, make sure it works (using DVD player), then use Toast to copy the disk image to a DVD. Works well.
I'm surprised that the Tech support at LaCie didn't know enough about their burners to tell me this!

This unit came with my new custom made desktop. I used it twice to burn CD's and it failed on the 3'rd attempt. I smelled that funny smell when electronics overheat, and then the Nero burning program shut down. I am now replacing this CD/DVD unit with a Plextor. Not all Samsung units are rated poorly, but this one surely failed.

Memorex 20x LightScribe Internal DVD Recorder (32023220) Review

Mine broke down after 21 days - stopped functioning at the same time as it developed a very loud buzzing noise. The store where I bought it (not a fine retailer like Amazon) refused to exchange it. Then I entered the dark world of Memorex warranty. It took two different phone calls (each over a half hour) just to get an RMA number. Then I shipped it (a month ago). Today I called to ask about the status of the replacement. The warehouse said they hadn't received the broken one yet. UPS was good enough to give me the date they received it, the door of the building it was delivered to and the name of the person who signed for it. I called Memorex back with this information. They said it will take until Monday to find it, then 4-6 weeks to send out the replacement. In the meantime, I'm without a drive. There ought to be a law that companies put as much enthusiasm into warranty as sales! I've used Memorex products since I was a kid (my first tape recorder), but this one will be my last.

I burned all 100 of these. They all worked in my lightscribe drive.
Beware however, the price is not as good as you might think, because the shipping is about 7.50, and you will pay it all because it comes from someone named genesysdtp.

Bought it not from Amazon but from a big box store here in our locale. Chose it from arrays of lightscribe rewriters because it was the only one that says on the OS section for system requirements that it works on Mac 10.4.10 or higher. There is a big circle by the way on the box that says it *is* Mac compatible. I tried installing it but nothing was happening. I called LG tech support; the IT guy said that it does not work on Mac per their manual (the manual by the way is embedded on the disc and you have to install it to "find" it). I read to him verbatim the part re the OS. Only to be told that it is not a guarantee that it would work. Huh?! But..but...that was the reason why we bought it! What a deception! A total ripoff.
Life is good but LG sucks!
PS. If there is a zero star..I would have selected it for this review.

Somewhat disappointed in product. I have a power MAC G4 running Apple OSX 10.4, and the LaCie DVD drive won't play DVD's on the computer. I bought it partly to play DVD's, but the Apple website that LaCie recommended to download a program from Apple that would allow DVD's to play was shut down - permanently. No downloadable programs that would allow the LaCie drive to play DVD's I recorded on a MAC G4 Quicksilver are known to me to be available.

Burning DVD's using Verbatim x16 Lightscribe DVD+R discs is a breeze. It is super quick and quiet. You hardly know it's even on when it's burning.
It's a multi format burner, so you can burn all sorts of formats, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW all CD's all speeds.
I tried the lightscribe last night and it looks amazing. It takes about 20 minutes to etch in to the disc. Again, this was super quiet process. No Coasters so far. Fantastic value.

This drive is fantastic. I am running Windows Vista SP1 64bit version with the i7 920 processor. This drive worked perfectly. The initial post on my system detected the drive. I got the OEM version which came with Nero and PowerDVD. I didn't need any screws, SATA cables (although it also came with one), SATA power cable (that connects to the power supply), or a 5.25" brace. I had to email LG because of a question concerning the firmware and I got a quick response. This particular drive already had the latest firmware and it's a plug and play type of drive (which I was told by LG).
Everything worked out of the box, my motherboard detected the SATA drive, and it works like a charm. The only minus is when you are burning onto a disc, Very slow! Still, I love LG products and that's the only negative. For this product, you will get nowhere if you go to LG's website. You have to go to the United States LG website which is http://us.lge.com/
I have an A/C , a cell phone, and a refrigerator by LG. Soon, I will be buying an LG stove, microwave and dishwasher. They never disappoint!
LG= Life's good!

I wouldn't pay a hundred bucks for this thing. I got the $50 deal. So far no problems. Works pretty fast and reliably. Pretty smooth and quiet. Pretty decent size footprint though. Utilizes external power(comes w/ power cord). The usb cord that these come with are pretty short as well. Possibly to keep transfer speeds up. Other than little quams aside, this thing works great and does exactly what I need it to do. Didn't even need to use the software that came with it. I just didn't wanna worry about any software conflicts. Plug and start burnin usin' the software you already have. It comes with a farely current version of Nero and Cyberlink DVD suite. I already have Cyberlink installed on my machine and thats what I use. Works great w/ no problem. I can't say much of anything 'bout nero though 'cuz I havn't used it.... No need really.
Overall, great product for the buy (Worth $50, Not $100+) Yes, Brand new for fifty bucks + shipping of course. These dill holes sellin this thing for 100 and 110+ are outta their f**kin minds!

I purchased the LG Electronics GP08LU10 8X Slim LightScribe DVD+/-RW External Drive to provide my MSI Wind U123 network with access to installation and recovery DVDs and CDs. (The Wind does not have an internal optical drive.)
The drive was recognized by the Wind and Windows XP Home without the need to install any drivers. It has a nice black polished look that matches the Wind's design fairly closely. (This is obviously not intentional, but it is a pleasant coincidence.)
The drive is reasonably fast, comes with USB cables and works well. My only criticism is that a carry case (especially at this price) would have been appreciated. But, admittedly, this is a nit.
All-all-all this is a nicely engineered drive that is well worth the money.

I purchased this as my Macbook did not have the capability to burn DVDs. This drive not only burns DVDs but dual layer discs to boot, and the Lightscribe is fantastic for making professional looking discs. The software that comes with the unit is not Mac compatible and I have not yet installed it on my Windows XP machine, so I can't speak to the quality of it. But the drive itself is great. I simply plugged it into my Mac and iMovie, iTunes, etc automatically recognized it and it's capabilities. For the Lightscribe to work you'll need an application, and LaCie offers a free one on their website. They even have a free Linux version too, unbelievable.
EDIT: The unit just died. 18 months is pretty pitiful if you ask me. Anyway, up until that moment I was satisfied but now it's a paper weight.

LG GP08LU10 8x DVD±RW Slim Super Multi Drive with LightScribe Review

LG GP08LU10 8x DVD±RW Slim Super Multi Drive with LightScribe
Average Reviews:

I bought this drive specifically for use with one of my Windows-based pcs. It works great with that, which I expected, and the windows software that comes with the drive is also wonderful and most welcome.
I did not, however, expect that it would work with my Macbook 1.83 gHz Core2 Duo. My internal optical drive is dying, and while it's pretty easy to use a network drive for installs and stuff, it's definitely not as convenient to go back and forth to the other desk. The documentation and all but one of the reviews were pretty clear that this was not a Mac-friendly product, so I was pleasantly surprised when the Mighty MacBook jumped right on playing the music cd in the drive.
I was even MORE surprised when it burned a DVD under the native/finder/disk burning application (no third party software involved at all).
And I was elated to learn that LightScribe had free downloads for the Mac, but I didn't really expect them to work in Snow Leopard.
But they do. AND it plays movies in the DVD player software. I don't know for certain whether my version of dvd player is the one that shipped with my macbook, or whether it's something that was bundled with my snow leopard disk, but movies open right up - impressively fast, as a matter of fact.

For some mysterious reason, LaCie doesn't advertise that this drive works with Mac OS X even though they provide Mac-compatible software for the drive. I was able to boot both my MacBook Core Duo and my MacBook Air using it. (Hold down option instead of 'c'.) The only downside is that the drive appears not to receive enough power from the bus, requiring the AC adapter.
Also, the stock image displayed here is completely wrong.

Me and my friends got a band, we used to send our master CDs to duplication house and have them make copies for us. We had no idea there are things like this exist. This year, we saw this device at the CES trade show. The machine seems to be working fine at the show, and the price seems reasonable, so we decided to chip in and purchase the unit to make copies ourselves.
The design is quite simple, the top loader basically drop the CDs into the burner below one by one, then the discs would be picked up and dropped at the front.
The device works like it's advertised. I can basically load 100 CDs (or few more since it's an opened loader) before going to bed, and have the copies made ready in the morning, simple enough.
It can also rip music CDs, which is very convenient for us, we all got large amount of CD collection, and we hate to pay to download them again.
Over all, it's a nice little machine. We have made about 500 CDs and no problem so far. I have to say it's money well spent.
