1) It reads Blu-Ray and HD DVD discs. Great for a home theater or do-everything PC. HD DVD capability will be attractive to cheapskates who can buy HD movies for a fraction of the cost of Blu-Ray.
2) It does the usual stuff you'd expect, reading and writing DVD (single and dual layer) and CDROM. It rips audio CDs just fine too.
3) It claims to support Lightscribe discs, but I've never tested that. Sharpie markers are cheaper and faster.
Bad Things:
1) The bundled player software is not a full version, so you may need to upgrade or buy a different program. (New versions may not support HD DVD.)
2) The first drive I got was defective... it wouldn't read Blu-Ray or HD DVDs consistently, although it read and wrote DVD just fine. The replacement works great. This is why it lost one star.
3) There can be problems if your TV and computer video card aren't HDCP compliant. Something called AnyDVD may fix that if it's legal where you are. (Cyberlink's "BD Advisor" program can check if your computer is up to the task of playing Blu-Ray content.)
4) It doesn't write Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, but who cares, since you can't afford Blu-Ray blank media yet anyway.
5) The activity LED is too bright if it's in your line of sight when watching movies. I covered it with tape.

(More customer reviews)The other reviewer had a entirely different experience than I. My version never worked from day one. It makes that horrible "drive about to fail" sound and will not burn anyting reliably.
It only identifies itself as a cd drive on my comp, and even then only burns a measly 225mb before giving up. I've tried multiple types of DVD's, from DVD rw to DVD-r to DVD+r, etc. Nothing works. ANd I work on comps for a living, no USB device should be this difficult; that is the point of usb.
ANd the unit was not recognized by this very modern laptop, the install software froze repeatedly and finally froze the whole laptop up several times. I've always loved my LG phones but this unit is garbage. I only give it one star becasue amazon will not allow zero

(More customer reviews)Product was very simple to install, plug and play. Instructions were perfect, directs you to web for most up to date lightscribe drivers. Roxio installed fine (on a Vaio), but didnt seem to run real well, but no matter because I had been running full Nero for some time. All features of this new double sided, lightscribe drive were available under it.
Burns DVDs lightening fast (as compared to my old 2X), and the lightscribe is "pretty darn cool". Eliminates most needs to do labels! (I say most only because it takes much more time to burn the label than to burn DVD so may not want it on all...). I did not try double sided, but that was not what made me buy.
Buy it! Or, wait until Lightscribe 1.2 hardware comes out (supposed to be better contrast on labels).

Sony Nec Optiarc AD-7241S-0B 24X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW SATA Drive with LightScribe, Bulk (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)If you read independent benchmarks, you will find that it's one of the best out there. In my own tests, I found that it does what it should, and does it well. I haven't tested the lightscribe, but I have tested reading DVDs and CDs, and this drive is fast. I've also had no problems burning DVDs and CDs at high speeds. It does not have problems due to riplock even with the included firmware. In other words, you don't need to do anything special to get high performance.
Unless you need Blu-ray and HD DVD (which is often included with Blu-ray drives as a throw in and seems useless, but lets you buy HD DVD closeouts for $3) then this drive should have everything you need.

Lite-On iHAP422 22x DVD±RW Drive with LightScribe Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this DVD-RW drive a few months ago. I bought this drive and I am really proud of it. The really great things I liked about it was that it included screws, a white bezel plate, and Nero 7 Essentials software for free. It would have been better if it included Cyberlink PowerDVD. I liked the white bezel because I have a white tower at home, so it matched perfectly.
I ordered it, and it arrived by in about 2 weeks.
I installed it in my computer, it was really easy and took 10 minutes. My computer worked with the drive, it was fully compatible with Windows XP. I really liked the interface of the Nero 7 software.
This was a great offer and value for the price. I had no problems with it, and I would greatly recommend to friends or anybody reading this review.

Apricorn EZ Writer LS DVD/CD Dual Layer Burner with LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling EZ-WTR-DVD-DL4-L (Silver) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great little DVD/CD reader/writer drive. Mine worked fine right out of the box, no software installation required. It will run on USB power alone OR if you'd like, it ALSO has an regular AC cord. I haven't used the AC cord, but it's nice to know that I have it just in case... It also comes with a nice black pouch to store/transport and protect it and a SHORT USB cord (but functional). Good stuff.
I had my own full version of Nero 8 Software so I didn't use the included software to burn DVD/CDs. It worked great with my software.
The unit is slim (about an inch high) and doesn't weigh much (12 oz). I've used it with my Acer Aspire One (Windows XP) on USB power and it works like a charm! No need for an extra A/C adapter since it's completely powered by the USB, even when the Acer is on battery! (I installed some software from a DVD on my Aspire One during a power outage and everything worked great.) I'm taking this on my trips for when I really need to access a DVD (with my Aspire) or if I want to burn a backup CD or DVD. This is great!
My tray drawer lines up and closes perfectly fine and the unit looks good as far as being study... it's not metal, I wouldn't step on it, but the plastic looks good and seems solid enough for me.
Overall I'm very pleased with this purchase and recommend it especially with an Acer Aspire One.
