Hurtado undergoes a needed reconstruction of the criterion for establishing family relationships among texts. Leaving behind the standard method of spot checking for internal agreements, he opts for a more eclectic view that a) looks at the entire text (book, manuscript, etc), b) establishes the percentage of all variants that two manuscripts agree on, c) considers the possibility of external factors influecing two manuscripts in a similar manner. Through this three part process, Hurtado shows that the manuscripts commonly termed "Caesarean" have little in common that cannot be attributed to normal scribal tendencies.
I was impressed both with Hurtado's method and conclusion, which both show the thumbprint of extensive work with collation, and would like to see his method carried out on the entire range of manuscripts to establish family groups.
