The Restored New Testament, Part 2: The Hellenic Fragments, Freed from the Pseudo-Jewish Interpolations, Harmonized and Done into English Verse and Prose Review

The first is titled "The Anointing of Iesous," which is a combination of the synoptic gospels into linear order, excluding all mention of Jewish religion, with commentary. Next is the "Crowning of Jesus," a metrical re-telling of the gospels, again only retaining the portions that Pryse sees as obviously Hellenic. (Pryse states that he feels the Mystery document "stolen" by the Jewish priests was a poem; therefore, he feels that the gospels themselves should be poems.) Pryse follows this with a summation and study of parts of the fourth gospel.
Next Pryse goes over the letters of Paul that he finds to be genuine (again, Pryse's estimation of which Paul letters were and weren't genuine are amazingly in keeping with today's scholarship), and once again covers the Apocalypse, though in this book he re-writes it in metrical form. He ignores Acts, as he finds it to be complete fabrication. The book concludes with literal translations of the Synoptic gospels, including the Jewish "additions," with commentary explaining why Pryse finds the Jewish religion parts to be interpolations to the original, Hellenic text.
This part is great, as Pryse's detestation of fundamentalist Christianity is full of acidic wit. This was my favorite part of the book, and I think the first-time reader should start off with this section, before diving into Pryse's re-writing of the Jesus story, the "Anointing of Iesous." I feel that it gives a better reasoning behind Pryse's theory; you understand more fully why he chose to edit out the Jewish parts of the gospels in his rewrite. Also, it points out obvious mistakes and forgeries in the gospels (most of which I'd never even realized) that, if read by an intelligent person, should put the final nail in the coffin of one's fundamentalism.
Again, though Pryse takes many liberties with the texts and makes many assumptions, his findings will prove to be on the mark for fans of Freke/Gandy/Doherty, and all who ponder the existence of a historical Jesus. I found Apocalypse Unsealed to be the more Earth-shaking book (Christendom owes Pryse many thanks for the writing of that book, as it gave freedom from the doom and gloom, mistaken idea that Revelations offers a future history of the world's end), but the Restored New Testament will provide insightful reading for those interested in the subjects it covers. Though James Morgan Pryse seems to have been forgotten by the modern reading public, his books are still relevant, possibly more relevant than ever. Let's hope a legitimate publisher brings this book back on the market; all we have now is this Kessingner edition, which is cheaply photocopied from an early printing, and, even worse, is split into two volumes.

(More customer reviews)I found this book on the one hand was eminently readable, yet examined in detail the various arguments for dating the Old Testament. Many scholars only examine external evidence with rather circumstantial links to the Old Testament literature. Davis considers not only these, but reviews in depth the internal evidence from the Old Testament itself, as well as archaeological evidence from Israel. I imagine it would appeal to anyone from an interested observer of Biblical times to a student in a theological seminary who may otherwise only study the external evidence.

Dating the Old Testament addresses the subject of when the books of the Bible were written. It explains why the books of Genesis through Deuteronomy are a literary unity, and how the Egyptian background for these books support a date of writing during the exodus generation. It provides a detailed critique of the Documentary Hypothesis, the theory that Genesis through Joshua were created from four different sources usually labelled J, E, D, and P. It provides extensive evidence that all of Isaiah was written by Isaiah himself, and shows why Isaiah may have had a role in the collection and publication of other Old Testament books. It describes why the book of Daniel should be considered a product of the early Persian era and not the much later Maccabean period. The book contains a discussion of how the Hebrew language changed during the Old Testament era, and how this can be used to help date the books of the Old Testament.

This phenomenon was witnessed by 8 individuals, who sat in a meditative state as these sessions were recorded. 3 stars Kindle version - poor footnoting
The technical: This is a review of the Kindle version. The linkage to footnotes/endnotes is non-existent. This is regrettable since they would help a reader to understand the storyline. This technical glitch would result in a 2 star rating if that was my only complaint. However -
I really wanted to like this book. I knew that I would not agree with the author's premises - i.e., the story of Jezebel in the Bible is pretty much a fabrication made up by the post-Babylonian exile Judeans equivalent to today's American Liberal Press - the scribes of Judah made it up to serve their own selfish needs. The story is fictional, sort of an alternate world historical novel. Not faith threatening even to a literate biblical fundamentalist.
Unfortunately the book is dull. The author has not been able to make the transition from academic journalese to simple entertainment. Jezebel does NOT come across as a real person - that is someone who is sometimes good/ sometimes bad/ sometimes mediocre. real people are full of passion, emotion, pain, joy, sorrows, etc -. but not the Jezebel of this book. She sounds like a detached historian. The most stunning example of this starts at location 1067 (remember this is a Kindle review) where Jezebel speaks of her son Ahaziah's murder. She is speaking in the third person to the reader and not an ounce of sorrow, anger, or mourning is expressed!!
It reads roughly like this: >>My "Kingfisher" Ahaziah was killed because he blah, blah, blah, and hum. Hum, hum, I (Jezebel) covered it up by Doo Doo Doo - ho hum and now my little Kestrel Joram will . . .

(More customer reviews)This is a reprint of Jeremiah Curtin's 1902 translation of Boleslaw Prus's 1895 Polish-language historical novel "Pharaoh." The book was retitled in the 1902 English translation to "The Pharaoh and the Priest" apparently due to the author's wish to highlight the important role, in his novel, of "the priest" Pentuer, named after a historic figure who appears in some Egyptological sources as "Pentaur."
"Pharaoh" was Prus's sole historical novel, and it is one that amply repays reading for what it has to say about statecraft, Egyptian history and culture, and the human condition. Its continuing interest is attested by translations into 20 languages and by a 1966 Polish film adaptation. The most recent English translation appeared in 2001, a century after the Curtin translation.
The Curtin-translation reprint, reviewed here, does not adequately represent the novel. It is, to begin with, missing the stunning Epilog, which was restored half a century after the original publication of Curtin's translation. More importantly, Curtin showed an abysmal understanding of the Polish language, a poor grasp of English style, and a primitive knowledge of the book's subject matter.
Consequently it is difficult to recommend this English translation of Prus's "Pharaoh." The reader would be well advised, instead, to seek out a more recent translation.
