(More customer reviews)This is not a book for beginners. It is too full of mistakes, contradictions and academic hubris to rely on. The copy editor of this work should be boiled in oil. For example - the glyph for lasso is called a brazier. Albeit, some of the phrases are of value and the pictures are first-rate.
On page 127, an inscription is shown and the author berates the long-dead scribe for having done it 'improperly'! Great heavenly days!
Intermediate and advanced students of ME will delight in testing their knowledge by conducting a mistake 'treasure hunt'. But others should look elsewhere.

Secrets in Stone : All About Maya Hieroglyphics Review

(More customer reviews)My 5 yo daughter pulled this off the shelf of our local library and said, "I want to read about Egypt." I glanced at the book and almost put it back when I saw what the topic really was. But, then I decided, "Hey, if she thinks it looks interesting, let's read it." Surprise! My 8 yo, she, and I all loved the book! We checked it out again recently, and my older child (who is now 9) devoured it in one sitting.
Learning how to read the hieroglyphs is a blast, and I loved the puzzles that the author sets for the reader. He has you find particular hieroglyphs in actual Maya inscriptions. I have seen some of the Maya ruins and loved them long before this book was published, but this book adds so much depth to the study of Maya history.
Plus, the book has raised hieroglyphs on the inside covers. You can then make rubbings of the hieroglyphs to form different words. A great purchase!

(More customer reviews)I bought this book for my 6 year old son after he expressed some interest in ancient Egypt. He can't read the text himself but enjoyed having it read to him and the text was straightforward and informative, with interesting illustrations that caught his attention and prompted questions. The really great thing about this book is that it contains a stencil so you can trace your own hieroglyphs. My son loves this. The first time he sat down with the book he probably spent 3 solid hours "writing" his name (and everyone else's name) in hieroglyphs - and this is a kid who rarely sits still.
