The Monster at the End of This Book (Sesame Street) (Big Bird's Favorites Board Books) Review

I wandered into the room of my best friend's three-year-old son, preparing to read him a book before he went to bed. When I saw this book among the pile on his floor, I got nostalgic. Really nostalgic. My mom read me the same book when I was his age, and I love, LOVE this book.
Not only does it teach you that sometimes the answer to all of your questions is right in front of you, but it does so by giving you pages of Grover, one of the most hysterical, lovable Muppets. The rattling of Grover's nerves, and the actual building of suspense in a picture book, keep the reader turning the book's pages -- even though Grover BEGS you not to do so. The reader is actually included in the narrative, for the book involves only Grover talking to the reader. The book thus becomes involving very quickly and entertaining throughout it.
Plus, the final punchline is a great payoff.
If you have children, this is an absolute must. Unlike other books from children's shows, this one's intelligent, maintains proper values and isn't beat-me-over-the-head annoying.

Lovable, furry old Grover is distressed to learn that there's a monster at the end of this book! He begs readers not to turn the pages, but of course kids feel they just have to see this monster for themselves. Grover is astonished--and kids are delighted--to discover who is really the monster at the end of the book!

The Pomegranate Seeds Review

My goodness the illustrations in this book are absolutely gorgeous, mysterious. Lots of introductions to classic greek characters, I didn't realize until I was halfway through it that this is a Nathaniel Hawthorne story, retold. It is the story of why we have winter, which is fun.
Amazon rates this picture book for ages 4-8, I think it might be best for older kids. Half of the pages do not have pictures, and it is less of a picture book than you would expect. The descriptions of Hades are really unique, and hey, I just like the name Persephone.

You can pretty much tell what this book is about from its title. It is a book, broken down into three major parts that gives lists of recommended books for children. The three parts are: School Subjects, Character and Values, Genres and Themes. Each of thes parts is further broken down into the specific lists themselves. For instance under Genres and Themes, there are Genres and Themes. Under themes there are Angels, Cowboys, Holidays. Some of these, such as Holidays are further broken down into Chinese New Year, Easter, Christmas, etc. All in all there are 100 lists.
While not copyright free, permission is given to libraries to copy the lists, put them into a newsletter or other such uses. The lists themself are organized on pages by themselves so that a library logo, clipart, etc. can be put on top of the pages before they are reproduced. There are also a dozen bookmarks that can be reprinted for library use.
Therre is a wealth of information here that can be of great help in the right situation.

Following Jesus: More About Young Children and Worship Review

Following Jesus: More About Young Children and Worship

I was very excited to hear that Sonja Stewart had published a follow-up to "Young Children and Worship." However, in actually looking through the book when I received it, I was disappointed to see that a certain amount of "Political Correctness" has been introduced, as well as some other elements that distract from the original Gospel accounts. Many of the stories have had a boy and girl added to the cast of characters. While I think I understand Ms. Stewart's intent (to draw young children into the stories in a "you are there" manner), I feel that it is actually a distraction. In some lessons there are more than twenty little wooden people to move around, which is difficult for the storyteller and confusing for the children. And some of the wondering questions, in particular, are hopelessly like something a school counselor leading a group discussion would come up with: (from the lesson entitled "Jesus' Trial") "I wonder why they want to kill Jesus just because they do not agree with him? I wonder how they could have settled their differences besides wanting to hurt or kill? I wonder what other ways Judas could have handled his guilt and sadness besides killing himself? I wonder how Judas could have been helped not to kill himself?" Perhaps I underestimate the wisdom of very young children, but I truly do not think they are yet ready to wrestle with the dynamics of first-century Jewish religious thought or the reasons why someone would end their own life.
Nevertheless, there are some excellent resources in this book, in particular the templates and instructions for making the materials. I just cannot imagine using this book "as is."

This volume introduces the life and teachings of Jesus to children aged 3 to 7. It sets Gospel stories in the context worship that children can relate to. Sonja Stewart offers advice on how to create a worship environment which enables young children to begin to appreciate the meaning of worship through biblical stories and parables. Focusing here on the life and teachings of Jesus, she shows how to illustrate the stories using felt and wooden materials so that the children can "read" them as well as hear them. At the same time, she translates the stories into a fourfold order of worship that parallels adult worship but is approriate for young children. The book includes 34 story presentations and patterns for the figures in the stories.

History Pockets: Ancient Egypt: Grades 4-6+ Review

This book was very helpful and a great deal of fun! Although we would have loved to have used it for a homeschoolers teaching tool, we actually used it for a birthday party. My 6yo son had an Egyptian Archealogical Dig for his birthday and we used this book to make games about the Ancient Egyptians and learn a lot more than we thought. I will purchase more in the series for our History lessons this school year-- what a great find!
