I first read about this story in Reader's Digest and was so engrossed in it that I went to my local Bookstore and ordered it shipped "RUSH". I was raised at an airport and have been an avid follower of aviation. I found this book to have a GREAT balance of technical and lay details of aviation. Furthermore, I had a long talk with a FedEx 727 Captain who was "Non-Reving" on our airline about this incident, he knows this crew personally and was there at the Memphis airport when this happened. He also thought that the book was well written and quite accurate and realistic. I LOVE true stories of courage and strength. I was not disappointed in the purchase of this book. GOOD LUCK to David, Jim, and Andy and their families. Our prayers are with you all. Dave ... Thanx for a GREAT Book. God Bless ... mike

Wilderness Survival: 1st Edition Review

Greg Davenport's simple approach to Wilderness Survival is the key to this user friendly educational text.
Greg posts on several of the wilderness survival forums. Through his book and posts I have come to understand his unique approach to wilderness survival. He believes that it is based on ones ability to do three things:
1. Stop and recognize the situation for what it is.
2. Identify your "five survival essentials" and prioritize them, in order of importance, for the environment that you are in.
3. Improvise to meet your needs using both your manmade and natural resources.

His book covers this process. It explains in step by step format how to meet your "five survival essentials" in every global environment. Davenport believes that these essentials are constant and the only thing that changes (from one climate to another) is the order and method in which they are met. These "five survival essentials" are:
1. Personal Protection (clothing, shelter, fire)
2. Signaling (manmade and improvised)
3. Sustenance (water and food ID, procurement, and preparation)
4. Travel (with and without a map and compass)
5. Health (psychological stress, traumatic and environmental injuries).

Davenport covers this information and more in his book (preview the table of contents). If you travel outdoors and are interested in learning about wilderness survival buy this book! You will not be disappointed.

Life in Ancient Egypt Review

Life in Ancient Egypt

Adolf Erman did a very fine job on writing this book. It basically covers what it was like to live along the Nile in Ancient times. His writing is very easy to understand and I recommend it to teachers to read to their classes. Unlike some other books, this one does not just talk about the well known pharaohs but some that I have never even heard of. He also includes many special events. This book was the best I have ever read about Egyptology and covers everything anyone would need to know.

Causes of Corruption of the New Testament Text Review

Causes of Corruption of the New Testament Text

A key work on its subject, this book, is one of the best accessible works on the differences between the Textus Receptus documents that underly the King James vs the Critical Text documents that underly all of the other "modern" English language bibles. Author Dean Burgon did extensive research to compare the varying underlying texts visiting the originals to see for himself. Publisher Jay Green SR. of Lafayette Indiana apparently created this summary excerpt of Dean Burgeon's larger works on the subject.
A slow read for those not knowing Greek but it is accessible enough to allow even those not knowing the languages to learn some key differences of these two sources.
What is great about this book is the intellectual weaving by Burgon showing errors by both orthodox and liberal bible text compilers. He admits to a few errors in Textus Receptus while showing the many in the Critical Text.
Examples: Page 30 shows the subtle changes afforded by the critical text that underly feminism and other modern philosophies. Pages 36 & 54 gives lists of old heretics that are quoted as authorities by modern bible scholars. This knowledge helps a person to understand how modern scholars have disassembled the early biblical church beliefs and then created a politically correct secular humanist cartoon church for today's church goers.
Yes, it is possible to find the best originals and translation. After you read this you will see the stupidity of modern day arguments on the subject. Those inserting error are seen as intellectuals in search of a career as they create alternate views throughout history. After Burgon dissects the subject it is seen as no more than a typical argument between those who really want the truth and the hotheads that would rather argue. It is deeply disappointingly to find out the low quality of the critical text that I've been fed much of my life.
Whether you agree with Burgon or not it is irresponsible to not read this if you are a person wanting to know this subject matter - it is that good and important an explanation.

Zia Review

Sequels are almost always a let-down. I loved IotBD in grade school, and was thrilled to discover the sequel -- twenty-five years later, while in the library with kids of my own. I took it home and devoured it, but was left dissatisfied.
Not only does Zia's story pale in comparison to Karana's heroic survival, but several moments left me frowning with annoyance.
First of all, the plot inconsistencies drove me mad. Midway through the book, we are given to believe that all the young people at the mission have run away, leaving only Karana and some old Indians behind. (This is crucial to the plot, as she alone is blamed by the cruel captain as a suspected accomplice of the runaways.) But then we learn, out of the blue, that her brother has also remained behind -- but we're never told why. Later, when Karana comes to the mission and is given a bed in the girls' sleeping quarters, I thought this room would now be desolate -- but O'Dell tells us it's still crowded. With whom?
Sadly too, the character of Karana takes a beating in this book. In IotBD, she was a hero, larger than life. But seen through Zia's eyes, she is a mute and pitiable recluse lost in a foreign world, who takes childish delight in melons. This might be realistic, but it's a pathetic turn of events that I would rather not have read.
There is also a tragic irony that runs through the plot, to wit: Karana left her island to seek companionship at long last. But in the sequel, we learn that she ends up withdrawing to an isolated cave where she recreates a tinier, sadder version of her free life on the island, before finally dying of a broken heart. Zia, meanwhile, originally left her home village for the regimented life of the Mission solely in the hope of finding Karana -- but in the end, what she learns from Karana is that she'd be better off back home.
In other words, both characters would have been better off if Zia had never heard of Karana and Karana had died on her island. And I think I would have been better off had I not stumbled across this book.
