I am a consummate note taker. Note taking is also a memory builder for me as I am a visual learner. I am a tax and business consulting CPA, and I take notes in each client meeting - either by phone or in person. This product allows me to keep a record of my hand written notes and save them to our computer network. I can access from any computer. I can also perform text searches on my handwriting! Yes, my beautiful, yet sometimes illegible writing. So, the neater you write, the better. Although I do not use the recording feature with clients, I do use it to track my notes from Sunday School class. The pen can track four different books, so my Sunday School class notes and the recordings thereof are in a separate book. An awesome pen system. Export to PDF or transcribe into text to Word. Upload to Evernote, Dropbox... I bought the 8gb. I synch every couple of days; recharge less frequently. Have never run out of storage memory or battery. Great little calculator built into the front of each book is very handy for an accountant. Just an incredibly useful product, and I have nothing but praise. Wake Forest, NC and Henderson, NC.

Livescribe AAA-00006 Premium Leather Case (Black) Review

Livescribe AAA-00006 Premium Leather Case (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Livescribe Pulse ships with a protective sleeve made of some undetermined material. It has a clear plastic window so you can see the Livescribe display, which on rare occasion is handy. There are also two slots for refills with a protective cover. There is also a "Nav Plus" control for basic navigation. Finally, there is a grommet to be used to remove the ink cartridge from the pen which is virtually indispensable when trying to remove the cartridge.
The overpriced leather case has none of those handy features. Inside it has a flap that covers the end of the pen, which is arguably a useful feature. And it has a clip, which the standard case lacks.
I wanted the clip to secure it to my shirt pocket or belt. Guess what? It doesn't work that well for either function. Before I ordered, I called Livescribe to make sure the leather case could be used on a belt. I was told it could. I compared it on the phone with the clip found on many cell phone and PDA case, where the clip fits firmly on the belt and attaches by a stud to the case.
No joy here. The clip is like a somewhat oversized pen clip. It could be forced over a typical men's belt, but would quickly be bent out of shape. Worse yet, the clip is simply retained by an ordinary pocket on the case - apply any pressure and the clip pulls out. Obviously, your Livescribe could disappear all too soon if you used this case on your belt.
Yes, the clip works okay on a shirt pocket, but compared to the original case, there is no advantage. In fact, the original case has more features.
I'm sending this back. I'll go on looking like a geek, which is the way I look anyway, and continue tucking the original case in my shirt pocket.
On the packaging, Livescribe says the "[d]etachable case clip keeps the Pulse smartpen connected to the Liverscribe dot paper". In my opinion, that's not the reason I would want a clip-on case. Moreover, that's not the way it works with the Livescribe Flip Notepad, their shirt pocket size medium.
Hopefully Livescribe will develop a case with a clip and the features found in the original.
Jerry

Livescribe Pulse Pro Charging Cradle Review

I wish they had put the USB connection on the other side, or gave the option to wrap it around. I feel like its backwards to the way you would have a pen sit in a holder (i.e. the pen should tilt towards you with the cable going out the back - it is the opposite)
UPDATE: i'll amend my above review to 4 stars and say that after using it for a while, it actually does make sense the way they designed it. It is also nicely weighted (could be even heavier IMO), so it is pretty much a one-handed operation. I now keep this one on my desk, and take the one that came with the pen with me in my bag when I travel for recharge & sync.

Livescribe 1 GB Pulse Smartpen (APA-00001) Review

Livescribe 1 GB Pulse Smartpen (APA-00001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start out by saying this is a cool product, and I do recommend it with the reservations mentioned, below.
On the plus side, it's a cool toy. If you want to record ephemeralities
rather than writing a lot of stuff out, it's great.
I don't know whether I would really want to use it to record entire
lectures, though, but that has to do with learning styles. I am not
an auditory learner - I prefer reading and writing. The more I write myself,
the more likely I am to remember the information. For an auditory learner,
however, this would be wonderful.
Some of the features need work. The advertised "translation" function is
not that great. Here are the languages it can translate: Arabic, Spanish,
Mandarin, and Swedish. Not much use to us German-, French-,
Italian-speaking folks. But then, it's really not much use to anyone else,
either, because it only has a capacity for a relatively small number of
basic words.
The desktop software that allows you to transfer your notes to your computer
can only be put on one computer at a time. This is a real mistake, IMO. Many
people have a desktop and a laptop and don't want to spend a lot of time
trying to figure out which they're most likely to want to use with the pen.
If you travel a lot, the laptop might win out. But whenever you're home, you
won't be able to transfer your notes to the desktop.
The software itself seems to work well, and it has lots of bells and whistles. It can upload
my notes to the Internet or share them with my classmates. For students, this is undoubtedly a great feature.
Since the pen uses a special kind of paper, Livescribe should offer it in
more than one form and size. It comes in a one-subject, spiralbound notebook
that is wider than an average college-ruled one. It would be helpful to have
the option of a non-spiralbound pad or one that is bound at the top, and to
have different sizes: steno-sized or even smaller, and perhaps a
three-subject full-sized notebook as well.
One final comment: this pen isn't going to be comfortable for anyone with
small hands to use for any length of time. It may not be all that
comfortable for people with big hands, either, unless they favor the fattest
fountain pen on the market. This isn't a pen-sized pen - it's a Cuban
cigar-sized pen. It's manageable, but after using it for half an hour, it's
a relief to switch to a regular pen. The Pulse is probably as small as it
can be, given the current state of technology, but if I were redesigning it,
I would go with a little longer and a little thinner and weight it so that
it's heavier toward the business end.

In taking my match, english, and world history classes: along with taking notes at HOA meetings. It has been the best thing to use. The HOA would have a "hissy" if they knew that they were being recorded along with my taking notes. Also the college instructors will soon find out from their Deans just how bad that they have been delivering speeches and giving inacurate responces to students and leading the students to make incorrect choices on tests. Yeah for the Smartpen.

This pen has been fantastic so far. I use it mostly for school. One of my professors doesn't like us to bring laptops to class because too many people don't pay attention, so it has been great for note taking. Was simple to figure out and I think I will end up using it for a lot of things!

Livescribe 2GB Pulse Smartpen (APA-00002) Review

Livescribe 2GB Pulse Smartpen (APA-00002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My brother ordered two of these pens when they were first available from the manufacturer. His thinking apparently was that he would have a backup should he ever lose one. Quickly realizing that he might have over-ordered, he offered one to me to try.
There were a lot of reasons I was not enthusiastic about his offer. The first was that unlike my brother, I actually do lose pens from time to time, even expensive ones. So if I lost this thing I would owe my brother money. Second, I am a Mac enthusiast and the desktop software for a Mac platform will not be available until the end of 2008. Finally, the necessity of the product escaped me.
But being a toy lover I put aside my objections and accepted his loan. A few weeks later I was calling customer support on a desktop issue (I installed it on my only Windows computer, a Toshiba tablet). The problem was a software glitch, since in reality the pen was still in beta. The customer service rep solving the problem asked if it was registered in my name. I assured her it was. I then told her that my brother had bought the pen but that he was never getting it back. I could hear my statement relayed around the support department where it was greeted with shouts and laughter. They knew. I was a convert. I had drunk the Kool-aid and was forever theirs.
Okay so what do I use it for? I take it to hearings and depositions (I am a lawyer, remember?). These are public events under Florida law and there is no reasonable expectation of privacy. This is important since the pen doesn't just record the strokes of the pen, it records everything being said. And it records it very well. Here is the cool part, touch a word in your notes and you will hear whatever was happening at that time. My favorite demonstration to date is to touch a word from a contested trial where I got to ask a witness if he had ever told people that he spoke to the dead and that they spoke back to him. The guy nearly came across the table at me, a point also recorded. Now an aside to lawyers, law students and pro se litigants-do not ever ask someone this question unless you have an email from the witness attesting to his ability to commune with the formerly alive.
The recording capacity of this pen is astonishing. The manufacturer suggests that the 2GB pen will hold 200 hours of audio. I have no reason to doubt it, since constant use has barely tapped its capacity.
When the pen is uploaded to the desktop software (currently Windows only) images of the notes and the audio are loaded into the computer. From there it can be uploaded to an online site where it is Mac accessible. For now this satisfies my Mac needs at least till the end of the year.
You need special paper to take advantage of the upload features. Fortunately, the supplies are reasonably priced and available online. However the notebook supplied with the pen is most generous.
There are lots of other features in the pen. It is possible to draw a keyboard and play notes (musical notes) on it. My daughter, a music ed major, particularly enjoys this. There is even a cute animation demo built in whose 3-D sound as heard through the earbuds is astonishing and mildly amusing.
So who could use this pen other than trial lawyers? Students seem to be a logical group. Perhaps physicians and nurses could use it. Did the patient really say he had a condition or did he say something else? Livescribe needs to produce industry specific paper for just such uses, or to allow outside vendors to create it.
This product will revolutionize the workplace in ways that we cannot now predict. All we can predict is that it will prove to be one of the most significant technologies of this decade in the same way the personal computer was in the 1980s. Click the"Buy" button now. You will not regret it.
BREAKING NEWS
The Mac Desktop (not the Beta) promised for the first quarter of 2009 will be available on 11/24/08 for download at [...]. It promises certain enhancements over the original windows software and the original beta released in November, 2008,
"The Mac version of Livescribe Desktop also offers two additional features not available in the Windows version. First, Mac users will have the ability to export their recordings into AAC audio files. Mac users can also export their notes as PDF files directly from the Desktop application. All current and new users of the Pulse smartpen can use Pulse with Mac computers for free. "
Addendum: As of February 2009 a full version of the Livescribe Desktop for Mac is available for download free to registered users. The Mac Desktop is fully functional and comparable but not identical to the Windows desktop. The Mac version lacks one major feature at this time-the ability to print the special paper found in the Windows version. Some users have reported that they are able to print paper using the Mac software and Adobe so this may not be that important an omission. Printing also does require a color laser printer at 600 dpi, the feature may be of limited utility in any event. On the plus side the Mac version allows the audio capture to be saved in AAC format which makes it playable on standard CDs. Third party software which converts handwriting to text is not currently offered for Mac.

The pen works great and is very easy to use. The conversion software does a great job, but is limited because it is the lite version and the full version is about $40. What I don't like is the ink quality. The pen itself does not flow smoothly and the ink skips. I haven't tried to change the ink yet so maybe that will make it a better writing tool.

Livescribe 2 GB Echo Smartpen Starter Pack (APA-00009) Review

Livescribe 2 GB Echo Smartpen Starter Pack (APA-00009)
Average Reviews:

In my line of work (Theoretical Physics) I tend to write a lot, mostly mathematical formulae, graphs and other non-standard material. This tends to create piles of papers, and getting it all organized can be a challenge. I tried using tablet PCs in the past, but the buggy software and the small, unresponsive, screen could not match the experience and effortlessness of writing on the real paper. There had been some electronic-paper solutions over the years, but they all had many flaws that made them unappealing to me. That's why I got really excited when I found out about LiveScribe. Unlike all the other solutions out there for digital note taking, with LiveScribe you actually use real paper and real (albeit technologically advanced) pen. There is no learning curve for using the system for the basic note-taking, and all the more advanced features are easy to learn after just a very short tutorial. The pen works with special software that imports all of your files (both your writing and the audio recordings) onto your computer. The files are in a special format that can be shared online through LiveScribe's community websites, and thus it is easy to share your notes with others who might be interested. The written files can also be saved in .pdf format, and can thus be shared with an even wider audience. In fact, that way they can even be incorporated in PowerPoint or similar presentations. The desktop software can be easily installed on both Mac and Windows computers.
The pen fits pretty naturally in your hand, and it's very easy to use. It is much larger than a regular pen, but it actually fits rather comfortably in your hand. In fact, it is probably more ergonomically kind to your hand than a regular pen.
The in-pen software is pretty cool. Your LiveScribe pen can read out what you had written, and even translate limited vocabulary into several other languages. Since I had bought the pen LiveScribe has opened their platform to the outside developers, so it is likely that we'll see many more interesting programs that take advantage of this remarkable pen.
In order for LiveScribe pen to work you need to buy notebooks that have been lined up with a special pattern. The paper in these notebooks looks just like any other regular paper to the naked eye, but if you look really closely you would be able to notice a minuscule pattern on all the pages. This pattern gets recognized by an infrared camera in the pen, and this is in fact the way that the pen recognizes and records what is being written. This is an amazing technological trick, but a slight downside is that you need to keep buying only notebooks that are patterned in this special way. The notebooks tend to be quite a bit more expensive than the regular notebooks, but overall they have totally been worth the investment for me. The combination of the pen and the notebooks is definitely much, much cheaper than all the alternatives, and it is way more effective and convenient as well.
The pen also needs special cartridges, and from what I have experienced thus far one cartridge does not last too long, especially as compared to the regular pens. However, I still find this to be a minor annoyance compared to all the benefits of LiveScribe system.
One day we may truly have a real electronic paper with all the look and feel of the regular paper, plus all the convenience and power of using a digital format to store your creative and other information. Until then, LiveScribe pen and paper are the best products out there that help you with these goals. I have been extremely satisfied with them thus far.

Livescribe AAA-00014 Echo 3D Recording Earbuds Review

Livescribe AAA-00014 Echo 3D Recording Earbuds
Average Reviews:

I have recorded lectures from the same location with and without the headphones in a room with 80+ students. With the headphones the sound volume is approximately double with a lot of the ambient noise such as A/C, fans, those two annoying girls behind me whining is greatly reduced to a point where it is nearly eliminated from the recording. It also eliminated the guy next to me asking me questions(I could hear my responses, but not his questions). It did not eliminate the comments from the lady right in front of me. However, I really appreciate not having to listen to those girls again while reviewing.
I run the cord up my right arm and over my right shoulder (I am right handed) and let them dangle on my chest. To ensure directional benefit, I hang one on either side of my neck. There is a slider that can be adjusted to hang in a clear spot. I have noticed no noise from clothing interference.
Overall I am impressed with the improved quality of my recordings, they are easy to use and really improve the usability of my notes, which is why I purchased the Echo.

Livescribe Deluxe Carrying Case Review

Livescribe Deluxe Carrying Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own the older Pulse SmartPen (not the newer Echo) so my model is a bit bigger. That said, it has no problem fitting in this case. There's also room for a cable, and even a few pens and pencils if they are the right length.
All in all, it's a functional case, and I like it a lot better than the standard case that comes with the pen. I can toss this into my bag with my books and notebook and not worry about anything getting damaged.
I deducted two stars because the material is cheap feeling - its faux leather and the texture is just not particularly pleasing. From a distance it looks like leather, which is good, but it's definitely not (nor does it claim to be, so my star reduction is not for that, but rather for the material they did use). The inside lining is a nice felt/velvety material that protects the contents well.
The second star was for the zipper and the price. I think this is a bit pricey for what you get, and the zipper is a bit difficult to get closed at times. I've had to wrangle with it more often than not. Not a huge deal, but at the end of class when I want to pack up and get going, to spend a minute trying to close the case just seems unnecessary. Take this as you will - it could be user error or maybe I just have a slightly funky zipper on mine - but it's worth noting.
It's definitely a step up from the standard case and if you are a LiveScribe junkie like me, you'll appreciate this addition to your repertoire.

overall this is as good as the moleskin notebooks. I love the feel, and size is perfect for business use. I started with the larger free notebook, but at work it just doesn't work. This one is perfect. The quality is very nice. Price point is just right. Just be cautious to make sure you get the right series. As with all their notebooks, you have to get 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, etc. You can't repeat unless you retire an old set. you can keep the old set retired in your software on your PC/Mac. Do not buy two sets of 1-2 or the pen will think its the same books. the PC software can keep track of the old books you've used, but the pen wont. I haven't gotten past the first set, so i'll comment once I get to another set. Great buy!

Livescribe A5 Single Subject Notebooks 4pk Review

Livescribe A5 Single Subject Notebooks 4pk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you receive the Livescribe pen, you get a starter notebook and this is the size of this A5 notebook, except there are thirty more pages than in the starter notebook. If you have yet to buy a smartpen or no longer have the starter notebook, go into a word document and do a page set up, there should be an option for an A5 page and that it the size of the notebook.
Size: I give this a 5/5 because when you are working on a desk with limited space, like a school desk or on with a computer, this size is perfect. Since it is smaller than the three-subject or single-subject notebook of regular sized paper, you can write easier without needing to maneuver the notebook around to write across the page or down at the bottom. Overall, the size is perfect for what I need.
Layout: I give this a 4/5 because the bottom buttons are laid out across two pages since the notebook is small. So, unless you do not fold the notebook in half and leave it opened, you will have to flip to get to the other buttons. There are no margins in the notebook which is a little weird. The last line does not reach all the way across the page; instead, it is indented some to leave room for the menu key. I think they could have taken that line out and put the other buttons onto the page using that space. Near the bottom by the perforated line is- 1Subject A5 Notebook #: Page #- on every page in all four notebooks, which seems weird since there is already a page number at the bottom corner of the page. You can write over it and the writing still shows up, so that is fine, just annoying. But overall, the layout works just fine for a small notebook.
Front and Back Cover: On both covers are four bubbles. The top bubble is a calculator which works just fine if you need something like that. Underneath that is a status bubble (date, time, battery, storage, audio settings, software version) and a settings bubble (date and time, display (brightness, scroll control, left handed, right handed), volume). Below the status bubble is the menu button called the nav plus which looks like a plus sign with arrows on it. I give this a 5/5 because the controls are what you need to do various tasks with your pen.
Cost: I give this a 4½/5 because it is cheaper than the 1 subject notebooks 4 pack, but not by much. I think that this note book could be a little cheaper since it is smaller and has fewer pages than the single-subject. However, for portability, I think that the price is pretty fair for what it is.
Overall this notebook is a good buy. It is more portable than the 3 or 1 subject notebooks that are regular sized as it can easily be slipped into a purse or a cargo pocket, and it won't take up a lot of space in a briefcase or backpack. If you are looking for something smaller and lighter than an 8½" by 11" options, but big enough to write a lot, then this notebook is for you.

Livescribe 4 GB Pulse Smartpen Review

Livescribe 4 GB Pulse Smartpen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow! This is truly an extraordinary technological wonder and products like this don't come along often - I'm certain that it will change the manner in which I study. While the Livescribe 4GB is rather expensive, its abilty to record notes, while seamlessly attaching audio to those notes is simply amazing. I've been using Microsoft's OneNote for most of the classes I've been taking recently - and that has been a fairly good product, but the ability of Livescribe to literally record your handwritten notes, attach audio to them, and then allow you to go back and review those notes (with audio) - all without the use of a laptop is simply phenomenal!
While the software that comes with the pen is sufficient, there are a few limitations that I suspect will be improved in future versions. The most notable problem seems to be the need to have a special notebook for each class (as one cannot, yet, separate existing Livescribe files into smaller units). Just the same, it's possible to examine the files on a computer although the the included software program is required to use all of the available functions when viewing/listening to files. Files can also be exported in a variety of formats (again, not all features will be available dependent upon how your files are exported) such as .pdf and Flash. While this may be a bit of an inconvenience, for me, this device is absolutely wonderful.
Another cool feature is the ability to upload your notes to a special location so that they may be shared with others - I've already tried doing this (as a test) with someone I know who is not very techogically savy and, again, the results were very cool!
I'm certainly going to show this to others I know (especially students) - this pen is certainly going to help many, many students.

I am a great believer in Livescribe's smartpens. The first offering three years ago Livescribe 2 GB Pulse Smartpen has worked perfectly ever since. It is not exactly svelte, but it had the capacity to record 200 hours of audio and has proved to be an extremely reliable and useful tool for a busy litigation practice.
The Echo is a refinement of the original Pulse. It is slimmer, and doesn't quite look like one of those metal cigar containers. It has twice the memory of my original smartpen. The price has come down over the years significantly making an investment in a smartpen even more attractive.
I use my pen to record initial client interviews as well as depositions. I am able using the Livescribe Desktop software to export a recording to a CD and send it to a client to hear. However the best feature is its "point and play" technology which allows me to listen selectively to a recording on my pen by touching a word in my notes. The audio immediately syncs to the part of the conversation and has a five second "skip back/skip forward" feature to account for slow writers like me. I can also listen later to my notes and add additional points of interest.
Audio fidelity is amazingly good. The pen has settings for different environments like lectures or office meetings. Even if you just use the default settings you will be pleased with the output.
Besides being thinner, the new Echo no longer requires a cradle, and attaches directly to a USB port on your Mac (that's me) or PC.This eliminates one more gadget I need to lug around in my briefcase.
Livescribe's special paper should not intimidate any prospective purchaser. First it is possible to print your own paper. Livescribe suggests that this requires a laser printer, but I have actually done it with an injet. You have to test in any event whether your printer is compatible which is how I learned some inkjet printers will work.
However users will find Livescribe notebooks to be very reasonably priced. I buy Livescribe ANA-00018 Single Lined 100 Page 5-8 Notebook - 4 Pack which makes the cost per notebook very comparable to ordinary spiral notebooks. Clearly Livescribe is refusing to adopt the model of printer manufacturers who make most of their money on supplies.
There are applications available for the Echo including a text recognition app that offers a 30 day free trial. However my handwriting is usually indecipherable even to me so I have never tried it. However the idea is great.
In the universe of Livescribe pens this is probably the one which should command your most serious consideration. 4GB is an an enormous amount of data and recording. I have never come close to filling 2GBs although I do remove recording from the pen from time to time while maintaining the audio on my Livescribe Desktop.
Livescribe has perfected a product that, as a tool for lawyers, for students, for physicians, and salesmen, as well a host of others was nearly perfect.

This is an excellent pen in its own right - extremely reliable right up until the cartridge runs out of ink, but additionally adds a great deal of utility in terms of being able to do voice recordings and get what is essentially a movie of yourself writing while recording sound. The pen is tremendously under-marketed by Livescribe and (in my opinion) most people are not really made aware of its full potential. The only way to really get what it's capable of is to watch some of the video reviews on Youtube.
Features I would like to see on future pens include better battery monitoring (currently, the meter is a little inaccurate), ink level monitoring and a small, compact tool for removing spent ink cartridges. Also, it would be nice if I could charge the pen with something more common like micro USB rather than the proprietary dock.
