The Virgin and The Priest: The Making of The Messiah Review

The Virgin and The Priest: The Making of The Messiah
Average Reviews:

This book is not guilty of the major crime perpetrated by most 'historical Jesus' works, yet Mark Gibb's book is ground breaking solid scholarship. There is a major problem, in my opinion, with 'historical Jesus' labors -- that area of scholarship which seeks to know the real non-supernatural person who left tangible effects in and especially on history through his actual words and deeds that resulted in the religion and dominant cultural sphere of Christianity. This problem, and wayward deed, is historical Jesus scholarship, mostly inadvertently, reduces Jesus to a clinical end analysis, ignoring the spirit and heart of the man, ignoring his personal yearnings, desires and life-purpose. It lays out the dead body on the autopsy table for inspection, and severs the cadaver into constituent parts: He said this. He didn't say that. He did this. He couldn't have done that. Here is the language he spoke, with its idioms and nuances. Here were his Jewish beliefs. Here is the Hebrew impact. Here are the Greek, and Roman affects. He was a peasant in a discontented illiterate pastoral society, and the like. Lay out each of the body parts on the table for inspection under hot dehydrating lights. All of them are true, yet each of them is dead. Where is the heart? Under what purpose and intention did these parts come together in a real male human with his own personal mission that only he and his "father" knew. How did he suffer trying to share his visions with others? How much was his social situation typical of new religious movements in general, when the founder is typically ostracized, persecuted, prosecuted by the establishment for upsetting the social order. What kind of personal jealousies swirl around a would-be spiritual teacher in his own family setting, among own small circle of friends, and in own neighborhood? How is Jesus like you and me, rather than either set above us, or set about us in pieces? Religions and cultural paradigm shifts do not arise from dead parts. Where is the humanity of Jesus? Are his spirit, intentions, and undisclosed desires something which we, at times, have shared and can identity with? Read Mark Gibbs' "The "Virgin and the Priest" for the marvelous and astonishing historical Jesus.

For the first time ever in print, The Virgin and The Priest unravels the Infancy Narratives of the New Testament to reveal how they were compiled to protect the truth of Jesus' parentage from those deemed incapable of receiving it. An ancient formula, explaining why "holy births" in the messianic lineage resulted from questionable sexual relationships, was insinuated into the gospel narratives. These trysts of the Old Testament heroes were necessary in order to "purify" Jesus' ancestry and allow his genetic inheritance to be "sinless." Far from advocating a miraculous birth, the New Testament informs us that Zacharias, the priestly father of John the Baptist, was Jesus' biological father.

With countless imaginative, nonsensical magical texts out there and new-age crap, where should one start to search for real serious stuff? This book is it. The research done is admirable and the stuff mentioned were really in use. Gives one a true view of what grimoires are and how they were used.
This is a very good book to start for anyone looking for real stuff.

This book is truly amazing! The author's of the publication really teach the essence of how we came to be in this world as we perceive it now and how we can break away from the chains of how we have created a linear time. The breakage of this time frame has really helped me as a reader to discover my own chains in my mind that keep me from establishing the type of lifestyle that I want to live and create for myself. I perceive things on a totally different level than I did before and I owe it all to the writings in this book. If you feel as though you need that additional push that is needed to reach a higher level of your own personal consciousness, I really recommend buying this book, you won't regret it...

Letters from the Inquisition is a daring work that exposes the torture of innocent victims, barbaric executions, graphic nudity, and Church sanctioned sadism believed to exist during one of history's darkest eras. After reading this piece of fiction, I was intrigued to research the facts. It was written from a different perspective that inspires the reader as a witness to the torture of the souls.

As a collector of medieval manuscripts, I found this book a wonderful resource for studying and researching within my own manuscripts, as well as others in the world. It's a very colorful and illustrated book, with many magnified and enlarged photographs of manuscripts so that the reader can get a better look at details! I recommend this book to any person who already collects manuscripts, or anyone who is simply interested in them, and needs information. You will find great history and background information within the pages of this book, as well. The "exhibit" in this book displays some of the most beautiful and inspiring manuscripts from the Victoria and Albert Museum. All 25 have good information and great photographs so that the reader can get "up close" to these priceless manuscripts. My applause goes out to the author, Rowan Watson, for a job WELL DONE!

The magnificent pages of medieval missals, books of hours, brevaries, and bibles sparkle with detail illuminating the world in which they were created. This splendid volume, featuring some of the finest illuminated masterpieces from the exceptional collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, details the remarkable collaboration and craftsmanship that went into the creation of these delicate treasures.Close-up details show the intricacies of the various techniques used to create these fragile and rarely seen works. By helping the reader to appreciate the individual elements of illumination--the initials, borders, illustrations, script, and binding--Rowan Watson brings the world of the scribes, illuminators, and book dealers to life, and sheds light on the cooperative religious communities in which many of them worked. Watson also looks at the survival of illumination after the printing press and its revival in the 19th century in the hands of such pioneering designers as Owen Jones and William Morris.

The Pocket Book of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo Review

The Pocket Book of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having just come back from Cairo, this Museum is by far one of the best museums I've ever been to in the world when it comes to artifacts and collections. However, it sucks for labeling of exhibits. And there's no photos allowed, so you're basically left to run around the Museum itself without a quality guide.
Enter the Pocket Book. I picked this book up at the Museum itself to help me remember the names and the major pieces of the Museum. Plus, since there are no photos allowed inside of the Museum, it helps me explain to friends and family what it is that I saw while in there. And it makes for an awesome book if you're into Egypt, the Pharoahs, the Pyramids or any of the historical things that makes Egypt a land of wonder - even just as a general reference book.
There's a larger companion to this book, which is around $50. Both are excellent books, but the latter is more of a nice coffee table book instead of this being a pocket reference guide.

The Gospels for Prayer Review

The Gospels for Prayer
Average Reviews:

Michael Hansen has produced an aesthetically beautiful book on how to pray with the Gospels. If you are used to reading or trying to pray with a standard bible or new testament chances are you will have lots of footnotes and comments and the text condensed into small columns on each page. Michael has produced the Gospels with the major passage from each section of the four Gospels on one page at a time, with no footnotes and not comments. It is a book that is designed to allow you to pray and enter more deeply your relationship with Jesus without distraction. Michael has also an excellent introduction outlining different ways of praying that can help you to use this book more effectively. It is a beautiful book that I cannot recomment highly enough.

The New World Order Review

The New World Order
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In this book, author and political thinker Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) posits that the world was at that time moving rapidly towards a socialist, one-world government. Examining various trends then occurring, he found that this movement was overwhelmingly supported by the bulk of the world's population, and he went on to suggest how the new world order would function and what it would look like.
This book was first published in 1939, when Mr. Wells was into his 70s. By this time in his life, he was already considered behind the times, and this book clearly shows that. He is surprisingly attached to the Nazism, which he imagines as a step in Germany's movement from democratic capitalism towards international socialism. (It wasn't until the end of the war that he found out that the SS had compiled a list of prominent Britons to be liquidated after Operation Sea Lion, and that near the top was his own name!)
In point of fact, what this book is is Wells' taking his love of international socialism and viewing then-current trends with the idea that everyone else was as enamored of it as he was. The analysis, seen from seventy years on, looks more like wishful thinking than like clear-eyed analysis. He was correct in his view of the dangers of Russia's "Tyranny of the Proletariat," but he failed to understand the nature of the men in charge of the Soviet Union - writing, for example, "Stalin, I believe, is honest and benevolent in intention..."
But, does it now, in the twenty-first century appear that Wells was right, and that the world is moving towards a socialist, one-world government? And, does that not mean that this book is as prescient as any of Wells's other works? I would argue that it doesn't, and that while trends may be moving towards one-world socialism, that Wells did not truly understand what was going on in his world and what the changes then occurring were and what they meant.
Overall, I found the book to be uninformative wishful thinking masquerading as serious analysis. It does not tell you anything about what was happening in 1939, nor does it tell you anything about how we got to today and where the world is going. I think that the book is an interesting look into Mr. Wells' worldview, but one that has nothing for anyone who is not interested in him personally. As such, I do not recommend this book.

Maccabees II Review

Maccabees II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, how can I say this in a nice way? If I had seen a review on this commentary explaining it in detail, I would not have purchased it.
Let me give my perspective, because I'm sure there are some buyers who might be interested in this type of commentary, but I am a pastor who is working on sermons for preaching in a local Church. I look for commentaries that avoid the endless speculations about who might have originally written what part of the text, and how it might have been modified by someone who might have existed a long time ago.
This commentary never seems to leave that subject behind. The author seems endlessly enamored with textual criticism. So if you love TC, buy this commentary. If it seems irrelevant to you, don't get this one.
Let me focus on the martyrdom of Eleazar in II Mac 6. At first I was really excited. I thought, "Wow-he gives a page of original translation of the martyrdom. Then he gives seven pages of notes!!" His translation is at times easy to understand, but at other times it is difficult to comprehend. One phrase was so unclear I had no idea what it meant. In contrast, my other translations of II Macc were able to help me grasp the meaning the first time through. So that wasn't good, but by the time I finished his notes on a section, I felt I discovered something that would be best for a research paper on redaction theories or something.
On Eleazar's martyrdom, this author seems to have a strong grasp of Ancient Near Eastern background to the Old Testament, with speculative theories about Mardukist Martyrdom texts providing illumination to the Jewish martyrdom texts (I found that implausible). His breadth of interaction reaches in every direction, except into the N.T. It's clear to my mind that Eleazar's martyrdom is a spectacular example of what Peter has in mind when he suggests adding 'Aretes' 'Virtue' to ones faith. Since 'aretes' is the key point of the story, setting up the inspiration of the seven martyred brothers in the next chapter, it seems odd to me that the author would find ties to Marduk, but nothing in common with Peter's writings!! And also given that Maccabees is one of keys sources for the study of Jewish backgrounds of the NT, I was disappointed with Goldstein's failure to tie into New Testament material.
Another thing that I found disappointing was that this commentary does not provide life transforming application of any kind, nor does it focus in an organized way on theological implications from the text.
All that aside, it has value. There are grammatical comments sprinkled throughout dealing with Greek issues that may help the reader grasp nuances more clearly. He also has extensive indexes in the back and ten pencil maps of various scenarios related to Maccabees. He has appendixes with titles like:
How the writers counted time. The Petition of the Samaritans and Antiochus IV's reply. Why it is unlikely that epistle 2 was composed between 67 BCE and 73 CE. (I would say between 67 BC and 73 AD)
His scripture index has a few references to the NT, but not much at all.
Basically, for pastors and Bible teachers who have to bring real life inspiration and transformation into peoples lives on a regular basis, you will not want to purchase this book. If you are into research and are looking for interesting theories to round out a paper for a school project, then this commentary might be your ticket.
BTW-the price printed on the back of this book is $35. I really did not appreciate being charged $10 over list by Amazon. I think if anything this commentary should sell for well below list. I would value it at about $19.95

I read this book as part of a masters research project on the development of early Christian scripture and worship practices. The author does an outstanding job presenting the development of literacy and education in the ancient Near East. I found the book not only a valuable resource, but Dr. Crenshaw's writing style also makes it a pleasure to read. This volume has found a permanent place in my library and I am sure it will serve as a reference for future projects.

In this groundbreaking new book, distinguished biblical scholar James L. Crenshaw investigates both the pragmatic hows and the philosophical whys of education in ancient Israel and its surroundings. Asking questions as basic as "Who were the teachers and students and from what segment of Israelite society did they come?" and "How did instructors interest young people in the things they had to say?" Crenshaw explores the institutions and practices of education in ancient Israel. The results are often surprising and more complicated than one would expect.Education, for the people who lived in the biblical world, was more than a simple matter of memorizing information and taking tests. It was a search for the hidden plan and presence of God. Knowledge was gained, according to biblical texts such as Ecclesiastes and Proverbs, not only by means of patient observation and listening, but through communication with Wisdom, the feminine incarnation of the Divine. Drawing upon a broad range of ancient sources, Crenshaw examines this religious dimension of education in ancient Israel, demonstrating how the practice of teaching and learning was transformed into the supreme act of worship.

Shades of Salem Witch Trials! This historic novel so scared me, that I actually had to put it down and walk away. Of course, I did pick it back up and finish reading it. I am so very thankful that I live in the 21st Century and not the 16th.
I quickly connected to the protagonist, Mia, and her sickly child, Alma. What a heavy load of problems Mia bears. She's married to hard-to-please Bjorn, the stern sheriff and cares for his bedridden mother. Even the ladies of the small village shun her. This gives Mia a very lonely existence. I hurt for her. As the plot unfolds, I feared for her.
An extensive Author's Note section, along with Discussion Questions and Supernatural Housekeeping are all included at the end of the novel.
Thank you to Bonnie at Christian Fiction Blog Alliance and David C. Cook for my copy.

Under his influence, village fear, guilt, and suspicion of women take a deadly turn. Jesus Miracle Of Love: Harmony Of The Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, John Review

Jesus Miracle Of Love: Harmony Of The Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, John
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book, Jesus Miracle of Love: Harmony of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John is primarily an attempt to present the events of the four gospels in a chronological order based upon the information in the gospels themselves and secondarily an attempt to group related teachings of Jesus together throughout the book. The Gospel of Mark is used as the prime source for the sequence of events. The first chapter addresses the order in which the four gospels were written based upon clues within the gospels themselves. Old Testament scriptures are included where they are referenced. There are some author comments. There is a unique chapter of select Old Testament scriptures presenting God's personal relationship with the Jewish people. All references are either from the four gospels or from the Old Testament. The King James Bible is used. The book includes a chart of the Harmony of the Gospels and a biblical map. This book is not a traditional "harmony" which tries to optimally merge the four gospels, but rather an attempt to place events in their correct chronological order.
